The five core numbers
Each core number is derived differently and is read for something distinct. Together they form a profile rather than a single verdict, and practitioners generally read them in combination.
- Life Path - from your full date of birth; the broadest of the five, read as overall orientation
- Expression (Destiny) - from all letters of your full birth name; read as natural capability
- Soul Urge (Heart's Desire) - from the vowels in your name; read as inner motivation
- Personality - from the consonants; read as how you tend to come across to others
- Birthday - from the day of the month you were born; a single specific trait marker
How the reduction works
Numbers are reduced by repeated digit summation until a single digit remains. A birth date of 14 March 1990 reduces the day, month, and year, then sums those results and reduces again. Name-based numbers assign each letter a value from 1 to 9 and follow the same procedure.
There is one important exception. When a reduction produces 11, 22, or 33, most schools stop there rather than reducing further. These are the master numbers, treated as carrying the qualities of their reduced form (2, 4, and 6) at higher intensity. Many calculators silently reduce them away; Dasha keeps them.
Which name to use
Convention holds that name-based numbers use the full name as originally recorded at birth, since that is the name the system treats as foundational. Married names, shortened forms, and adopted spellings are sometimes calculated separately as a secondary reading.
This gets complicated in India, where naming conventions vary widely by region and community, transliteration from Indic scripts into Roman letters is inconsistent, and many people have a formal name that differs from the one they use daily. There is no single correct answer. Use the name on your earliest official record for the primary calculation, and treat alternate spellings as additional perspectives rather than corrections.

Numerology and Jyotish are different systems
It is worth being clear that numerology and Vedic astrology are separate traditions with separate histories and separate methods. Popular Indian practice sometimes blends them - assigning planetary rulers to numbers, for instance - but that blending is a modern synthesis, not a classical Jyotish doctrine.
Dasha keeps them separate on purpose. Your Kundli is calculated from ephemeris data with the Lahiri ayanamsa; your numerology numbers are calculated from your date and name. We do not present one as validating the other, and we do not pretend the combination carries more authority than either does alone.
How to use your numbers
The useful mode here is reflective. A Life Path number is a prompt for thinking about how you tend to approach things, and it works best as a description you can accept, argue with, or set aside. It is not a measurement.

What the single digits traditionally represent
Each reduced number carries a short set of conventional associations. They are broad by design, and they are meant to be read as tendencies rather than as descriptions of a person. The same digit also reads differently depending on which core position it occupies - a 7 as your Life Path is a different claim from a 7 as your Personality.
